LPG shortage threatens wedding catering services in Vizag
Visakhapatnam: Catering service providers in parts of Vizag are facing operational challenges as a shortage of LPG cylinders threatens wedding functions this March. Caterers say it is becoming increasingly difficult to manage large gatherings if the commercial LPG crisis continues. With Muhurtham days approaching—considered most auspicious for weddings and other events—caterers are struggling to find alternative fuels to prepare elaborate menus. Hindu marriages, birthday celebrations, and weddings across communities are all scheduled this month, adding to the pressure.

N Ramesh, proprietor of VNR Catering, said the shortage has forced them to consider firewood as the only immediate option, though most function halls are not equipped for such cooking. "Apart from firewood, we may have to purchase cylinders on the black market as we cannot cancel services agreed upon a month ago," he said.Caterers explained that serving 600–1,000 guests requires at least eight cylinders. A cylinder that cost ₹2,000 earlier is now selling for nearly ₹4,000 in the black market. While some are willing to pay higher prices, availability itself remains uncertain.Traditionally, caterers prepare biryani, rice, and sambar on firewood stoves, while LPG is essential for fried items and slow-cooked dishes. With supplies dwindling, caterers are appealing to customers to reduce menus involving deep frying and simmering, but customers insist on full menus, citing guest satisfaction as their priority.
