TIRUPATI: In a bid to meet burgeoning demand for drinking
water
, the
Tirupati municipal
corporation
is considering measures to increase the storage
capacity
of the
Kailasagiri reservoir
. A sum of nearly Rs 30 crore is being set aside for the purpose.
Speaking to reporters at the YSR Conference Hall,
municipal
commissioner PS Girisha said that the corporation and the irrigation department are jointly preparing a proposal to increase the storage capacity of Kailasagiri reservoir from 200 mc feet to 400 mc feet.
“We will send proposals to the state government for approval soon and are confident that works will be expedited to provide for the drinking water needs of denizens of the temple city,” said the municipal commissioner. Girisha further said, “We have been supplying drinking water to 10 wards within the civic body limits on a daily basis. Now, measures would be taken to provide drinking water to all wards in the city after the storage capacity is increase.”
Talking about development activities as part of the Tirupati smart city project, the municipal commissioner said that tenders will be invited soon for the construction of a new corporation office. “Measures have been taken to complete big projects including Garuda Varadhi and underground cabling on time,” he said while adding that the corporation is contemplating development of burial grounds within civic body limits. Around 22 schools are being developed under the Manabadi Nadu-Nedu programme, he informed further.
Earlier, the municipal commissioner and Tirupati MLA Bhumana Karunakar Reddy visited the burial ground near Railway Colony. Upon noticing the mess around the area, the commissioner directed officials to clear the bushes and maintain hygiene at the burial ground premises. He instructed officials to provide water and electricity to the burial ground.
