VIJAYAWADA: The Union Jal Shakti ministry has decided to hold a meeting on December 6 on the management of projects on the river Krishna and distribution of water between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
At a virtual meeting on Saturday, Jal Shakti ministry secretary Debashree Mukherjee told the chief secretaries of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to stop fighting over the distribution of water.
She also told Andhra Pradesh to stop drawing of water from Nagarjuna Sagar till December 6 when the meeting between the two Telugu states will be held.
Andhra Pradesh chief secretary KS Jawahar Reddy explained in detail the "continued indiscriminate" use of water from Srisailam project for power production by Telangana and collecting the same downstream from Nagarjuna Sagar project so as to maintain "complete control of water releases from NSP on both sides to its (Telangana) advantage denying the legitimate agreed share of water to Andhra Pradesh".
The chief secretary explained the "historic injustice" done to AP, as the control of facilities on the left bank in Srisailam project is taken over by Telangana although Srisailam project is supposed to be under the control of Kurnool chief engineer.
MoJS secretary urged to facilitate shifting of KRMB HQ to Vizag Whereas all the off takes on the right bank of Nagarjuna Sagar project located in the territory of AP and the left bank (in Telangana) are taken under the control of Telangana.
Andhra Pradesh made to request Telangana for release of water through right main canal which caters exclusive to the needs in AP and located in the territory of AP for implementing release orders of KRMB, he said.
The chief secretary explained the "mala fide intention" of Telangana to draw water exclusively for power generation through the left power house of Srisailam without proper indent and release orders in order to store the same in NSP wherein they have full control of all the off takes, and not to facilitate required level to build up in Srisailam for drawl of water by AP.
He also informed that the control on the facilities located on the right bank in AP territory is taken and assured that it will be operated as per the release orders of KRMB from time to time.
The presence of AP police will be continued to ensure law and order at the project site till a decision is taken on implementation of notification of the government of India on the jurisdiction of KRMB.
He clarified that the Go AP has issued orders expressing its willingness to hand over the control of identified off takes to KRMB whereas Telangana allegedly refused to do so. Meanwhile, an indent is placed for release of five tmc ft of water from eligible agreed allocated share of AP through right main canal of Nagarjuna Sagar to meet the exigency of drinking water needs.
The secretary, MoJS, requested AP to stop water releases as a good gesture till KRMB takes a decision on the indent placed by AP on Monday and the proposal to meet on December 6 physically in Delhi to discuss all the issues are agreed.
The chief secretary requested the secretary, MoJS, to give directions to the chairman, KRMB, to shift KRMB headquarters from Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam early as suitable accommodation is kept ready for which the secretary, MoJS, has agreed.
