Andhra Pradesh: Infant girl killed, mother, granny great granny held for infanticide

RAJAHMUNDRY: In a case of female infanticide, a fortnight-old baby was killed by her mother, grandmother and great grandmother fearing that she would be a financial burden for them. The accused allegedly threw the baby girl into a well and to cover up their heinous crime, they scripted a tale that the infant was kidnapped by an unidentified person.
The police arrested the trio and sent them to judicial remand.This is the first case of female infanticide in AP in recent memory in which three generation of women were allegedly involved. The trio thought that they would fall into poverty by bringing up the female child and decided to eliminate her, the police told media here on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Chinakodepudi village of Sithanagaram mandal in East Godavari district. According to Rajahmundry urban north zone DSP, P Satyanarayana Rao, a woman, Srujana, gave birth to a girl about 15 days ago. Srujana returned to her mother's house after she was discharged from hospital.
Srujana's mother Mahalakshmi and grandmother Kanakarathnam, who were not interested in a girl child, thought she meant expenditure for the family, and decided to kill her. They convinced Srujana to kill the baby, police said.
Police said the family has all girl children and the members were craving for a boy. On the intervening night of June 19, all the three women went to a well in the village outskirts and threw the baby into it.
On returning home, the accused said the baby was kidnapped. When the issue reached the police, they called the women and questioned them. The women reportedly admitted to the crime. Police arrested the three.
