Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) demolished the structure that housed the popular Matsya Darshini fish aquarium near RK Beach in Visakhapatnam. The GVMC had leased out the building to a private party that operated the aquarium. It is learnt that there was a dispute between the civic body and the leaseholder. GVMC officials said the state government would make a decision on the future use of the site.
Matsya Darshini, a popular public aquarium, was one of the well-known tourist attractions in the city. It was visited by families, students and tourists throughout the year. The aquarium showcased a wide variety of freshwater and marine fish species, including colourful clownfish, lionfish, butterfly fish, stingrays and sea anemones. Some exotic species had been brought from abroad.
The aquarium was developed to create awareness about marine life and fisheries. Visitors could walk through different sections displaying fish tanks and aquatic creatures in a simple educational setting. Located close to the beach, it was often included in Vizag sightseeing trips.
The aquarium also served as a recreational and learning centre for children, helping them understand aquatic biodiversity and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. During weekends and holidays, the place attracted large crowds because of its convenient location near the sea.
