Guntur: With temperatures rising, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has unveiled a ₹2.7-crore summer action plan to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply and prevent shortages across the city. Municipal commissioner K. Mayur Ashok directed engineering officials to implement the plan immediately, warning that any lapse leading to scarcity would be taken seriously.
The plan focuses on strengthening infrastructure, preventing contamination and improving monitoring systems. The engineering wing has identified 823 vulnerable points across 206 locations where water pipelines pass over drainage channels, posing a risk of contamination. The GMC has decided to remove these risky drain-cross pipelines and replace them with safer alternatives on priority. "The objective of the summer action plan is to ensure adequate and safe drinking water supply to every part of the city. Any lapse leading to water shortage will be viewed seriously, and the concerned engineering officials will be held personally responsible," warned Mayur Ashok.
To maintain water quality, ward amenities secretaries have been instructed to collect at least 10 water samples daily during supply hours and ensure adequate chlorine levels. The results must be uploaded on the APCM app, with Assistant Engineers (AEs) and Deputy Executive Engineers (DEEs) tasked with strict supervision.
The corporation has earmarked ₹1 crore for laying new pipelines in areas facing shortages. Additionally, ₹50 lakh has been allocated for drilling new power bore wells, while ₹40 lakh will be used for repairing existing bore wells to optimise groundwater utilisation. To tackle water issues in merged areas, six special water tankers will be kept on standby to supply drinking water on a war footing wherever needed. The GMC has also planned to set up 20 drinking water kiosks (chalivendrams) at busy locations to provide relief to the public. Further, green mat sheds will be installed at four major traffic junctions to offer respite from the heat during signal halts. Regular cleaning of all reservoirs has also been mandated within a fixed schedule.
