VIJAYAWADA: People residing in the hilly areas of city are panicking after a row of landslides that took place in the last two days. Kanaka Durga temple ghat road was partially damaged after boulders rolled downhill and smashed into the road.
Around 2.5 lakh people in Vijayawada city reside on hilly terrains. Gunadala, Machavaram, Chuttugunta, Moghalrajapuram, Christurajapuram, Kothapeta, Chittinagar, Vidhyadharapuram and other areas have huge number of people residing in hilly areas.
The city registered incessant rains on Tuesday and Wednesday and many minor landslide incidents were registered in hilly areas. A woman named K Aruna was injured in a landslide at Ravichettu centre as a rolling hill boulder fell on a house. Residents at Gunadala Gangireddu Dibba and Chinna Quary expressed anger at municipal authorities for ignoring the protective mesh works proposed in hilly areas.
A major accident was averted on Kanaka Durga temple ghat road as huge hill boulders rolled down late at night. Authorities closed the ghat road based on the warning issued by temple engineering department.
