FAIFA proposes a four-pronged strategy for transition of Indian agriculture
VIJAYAWADA: A white paper released by the Federation of All India Farmer Associations (FAIFA) on Thursday proposed a four-pronged strategy to transition Indian agriculture from subsistence farming to a resilient, high-value and export-oriented model. It warned that the country’s food system is under mounting pressure from rising demand and structural constraints. The white paper was unveiled at a national seminar organised by FAIFA as a prelude to Kisan Divas 2025.
The document highlighted that India’s population is projected to exceed 1.6 billion by 2050, while rising disposable incomes and the rapid expansion of the middle class are reshaping dietary preferences toward more diverse and high-value foods. These demand-side shifts, FAIFA noted, are unfolding alongside shrinking and fragmented farmland caused by urbanisation, industrial growth and inheritance patterns, posing serious challenges to food security and farm incomes. To address these pressures, the white paper called for large-scale adoption of permaculture and agro-ecological practices, diversification of agricultural exports with a focus on value addition, preservation of India’s non-GMO seed heritage through expansion of indigenous varieties, and a comprehensive overhaul of agricultural financing using AI-driven digital lending platforms.
FAIFA president Murali Babu said India has made significant progress in achieving food security, with food grain production crossing 315 million tonnes in recent years, but feeding an ever-growing population remains a formidable task. He pointed out that affordability continues to be a concern for vulnerable sections even when overall production is adequate, while regional dietary diversity—ranging from wheat-dominant regions in the north to rice-based diets in the south—adds further complexity. Ensuring food self-sufficiency, he said, is not merely an economic objective but a strategic imperative for national stability and public health, with farmers playing a decisive role.
FAIFA vice-president Vikram Urs said the four-pillar framework offers a unified response to the structural challenges confronting Indian agriculture. By aligning ecological sustainability with export competitiveness, seed sovereignty and digital finance, the strategy builds resilience from the farm level to the national economy. He added that the proposed transformation would empower farmers, accelerate innovation and create the conditions for inclusive and sustained growth, while positioning Indian agriculture as globally competitive, environmentally responsible and socially equitable.
In his address, minister of state for heavy industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma said the ideas presented in the white paper resonate strongly with the govt’s vision of placing farmers at the centre of India’s development journey. He said that under the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi, policies focused on digital agriculture, sustainable farming, indigenous seed development and enhanced agri-financing are helping make Indian agriculture future-ready, profitable and globally competitive, with empowered farmers as key partners in national growth.
