VIJAYAWADA: The rise of deepfakes in Andhra Pradesh politics is indeed concerning as it not only affects individuals but also undermines the integrity of the political process ahead of general elections. Such incidents describe how technology can be misused to defame opponents and spread false narratives.
Revenge politics through morphed images further exacerbates the situation. While the immediate community might recognise the images as doctored, the damage to the victims’ reputations and the political party’s image is done.
Andhra politics reached a new low with the spread of a vulgar and explicit deepfake video of a political party’s woman supporter. The video link was shared by some X users on Friday. The victim woman showed courage and responded to those who posted her picture with disrespectful comments and video link. She tweeted that such fake videos do not tarnish her image and such falsehoods cannot damage her dignity or self-respect.
The victim woman, taking to X, alleged it was their rival party social media activists who posted the explicit video and attacked the victim with several tweets and derogatory comments from their social media accounts. She alleged the party chief’s spouse is heading the party’s social media handle and is behind such fake videos which are made viral to defame her. She challenged the rival party’s top leaders and its activists to reply to the questions over governance and policy decisions rather than resorting to outrage women’s modesty by creating such fake videos. “What have you done, will hit back”, she asserted.
Despite alerts to the police on X by a few people tagging AP Police’s official X account, no actions have been initiated yet.
Similarly, an alleged visual audio of a prominent party’s spouse went viral on social media. The clipping is widely circulated by a group on social media and the intention is to project the leader’s spouse in a bad light.
