Customs department takes the ‘Right Turn’ to support trade and economy
Visakhapatnam: People often associate the customs department primarily with airport officers screening passengers arriving from abroad. However, in reality, a majority of their work, around 95%, focuses on cargo management. Customs officers at airports, seaports, and inland container depots primarily handle cargo clearance, import/export documentation, and revenue collection through duties, taxes, and tariffs. A short film produced by the Visakhapatnam Custom House, titled ‘Right Turn', explains the roles and responsibilities of customs officers and highlights their broader social responsibilities. The film, written, directed, and acted by in-house customs officers, required external assistance only for cinematography, music, and editing. According to officials, it received good response from viewers and was subsequently submitted to the 10th Indian World Film Festival conducted in Hyderabad on March 7. Out of 417 global entries, 94 films were selected for the official list, and ‘Right Turn' was picked for the Jury Mention Award.A special screening of the short film was held in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Principal chief commissioner of customs and central tax, Sanjay Rathi, said the film conveys that despite limitations, customs officers should help trade wherever possible.
"Officers perform their duties in a structured manner, while stakeholders often face difficult challenges, such as the current Gulf crisis. The message is to understand their problems and facilitate trade to the extent we can, even after office hours if needed, as timely support can make a real difference. One consignment or one ship can impact the entire supply chain, affecting livelihoods and industry. As officers, we must work with empathy while maintaining rules, ensuring smooth trade and compliance. This film is especially relevant at times of crisis, reminding us that we and the trade community must face challenges together," said Rathi.Principal commissioner of Visakhapatnam customs, N Sridhar, said the film highlights the importance of customs officers in supporting the economy and the livelihood of the common man. "Each officer has a specific, segmented role, from paperwork to enforcement, which collectively impacts trade and compliance. The project emphasises the professionalism, diligence, and rule-bound nature of customs officers in safeguarding national interests," said Sridhar.Visakhapatnam Customs, which oversees the Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram ports as well as the airport, plays a crucial role in facilitating legitimate international trade.
