TIRUPATI: Police seized a truck in which 34 tons of public distribution rice was being smuggled away to Karnataka from Chittoor district on Friday.
Briefing reporters about the seizure, Special enforcement bureau additional SP Rishanth Reddy IPS said that Chittoor rural circle inspector K Balaiah and his team were conducting vehicular checks near Penumuru when they spotted a truck carrying public distribution rice.
When police questioned the four inmates of the truck, they confessed that PDS rice consignment procured illegally by one Kishore Kumar in Tirupati was being transported to rice millers godowns located at Bangarupet in Kolar district of Karnataka.
Following the confession, police arrested A Kishore Kumar (41), B Mahesh Reddy (29), B Eswaraiah (39), R Kiran Kumar (27), G Rakesh (23), G Tulasi Ram (33) and K Muniraja (35).
Police seized 34 tons of PDS rice and the truck used by the gang for their smuggling activity.
