Visakhapatnam: The Union govt will release a commemorative silver coin to mark the centenary year of Andhra University. The finance ministry has published an official gazette notification to this effect. The coin is likely to be released during the closing ceremony of the centenary celebrations on April 27, which will be attended by vice-president C P Radhakrishnan and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Inaugurated on April 26, 1926, the university will complete 100 years of its existence this week.
The commemorative coin, of a denomination of one hundred rupees, will be minted to mark the occasion. According to the notification issued by the finance ministry, the obverse of the coin will feature the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar at the centre, with the inscription ‘Satyamev Jayate' (in Hindi) below. It will have ‘Bharat' in Devanagari script on the left side and ‘India' on the right, along with the rupee symbol (₹) and the denomination (100).
On the reverse, the coin will display the official logo of Andhra University at the centre, with the years ‘1926' on the left and ‘2026' on the right. The upper edge will carry the inscription ‘Andhra Vishwavidyalaya ka Shatabdi Varsh' (in Hindi), while the lower edge will read ‘Centenary Year of Andhra University'.
The coin will be circular, with a diameter of 44 millimetres and 200 serrations. It will be made of an alloy consisting of 50% silver, 40% copper, and 5% each of nickel and zinc. The standard weight will be around 35 grams.
The Union govt releases commemorative coins to mark significant anniversaries, personalities, and institutions. In recent years, coins have been issued to mark the centenary of the RSS, the birth centenary of agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan, the 100th birth anniversary of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N T Rama Rao, the centenary of cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika, and to honour Acharya Mahapragya, to name a few.
