Awake heart bypass surgery successfully performed on cancer patient at Aster Ramesh Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh
GUNTUR: The cardiac surgical team headed by renowned CTV surgeon Dr Jayaram Pai, at Aster Ramesh Hospitals, Guntur, has achieved a remarkable medical milestone by successfully performing an Awake Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) on a 64-year-old high-risk patient. The patient, suffering from multiple health conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and severe blockages in three coronary arteries, had a history of right lung cancer. Following a lobectomy (removal of part of the right lung) and subsequent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the patient’s lung function was significantly compromised. As a result, conventional heart surgery under general anesthesia posed a very high risk.Taking into account this complex clinical scenario, the surgical team, led by senior cardiac surgeon Dr. Jayaram Pai and senior DM Cardiac Anesthesiologist Dr. Loganathan, decided to perform the bypass surgery without administering general anesthesia, keeping the patient awake throughout the procedure. This innovative approach eliminated the need for ventilator support and significantly reduced the risk of post-operative pulmonary complications.
Maintaining patient stability throughout the surgery, Dr. Jayaram Pai stated that such awake cardiac procedures are safe and effective, even in patients with multiple comorbidities.Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pothineni Ramesh Babu, Managing Director and Chief Cardiologist, said that this rare achievement has opened new possibilities in treating cardiac patients with poor lung function. He emphasized that advanced technology, clinical expertise, and a strong commitment to patient safety were key factors behind this success. He also congratulated the surgical and critical care teams for setting a new benchmark in high-risk cardiac care.Dr. Ramesh Babu further added that Aster Ramesh Hospitals group has performed over 30,000 cardiac surgeries with a high success rate, earning recognition as one of the most trusted and successful cardiac surgery centers in the country.Senior Cardio Thoracic and Vascular surgeons Dr. Jayaram Pai, Dr. Siva Prasad, Dr. Mrityunjay, Dr. Ashok Kumar, Dr. Bharat Siddharth, and Dr. Srikant Mahapatra are providing expert cardiac care across the coastal corridor at Aster Ramesh Hospitals in Guntur, Ongole, and Vijayawada, stated Dr. Mamata Rayapati, Deputy Managing Director. She added that the team has extensive experience in performing complex cardiac and vascular surgeries for patients ranging from newborns to 90 years of age.Dr. Mamata Rayapati further highlighted that the team has performed over 50,000 complex cardiac and vascular procedures, including:25 Heart TransplantsUp to 1,200 Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeries (MICS)Over 1,000 Emergency Bypass SurgeriesAround 1,200 Neonatal Cardiac Surgeries. The press meet was also attended by Dr. Loganathan Cardiac Anesthesiologist and Dr. Karthik Chowdary,Cluster Business Head.
