Vijayawada: City police, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), and irrigation department have made elaborate arrangements for the immersion of Ganesh idols which is scheduled to start from Wednesday. VMC commissioner Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar inspected the arrangements on the downstream of Prakasam barrage on Tuesday.
Unlike metro cities, Vijayawada doesn’t have a common day for Ganesh Nimarjan. Ganesh festival organisers start Ganesh idol immersion from the third day. Usually, Ganesh idols are immersed at special points arranged at Prakasam barrage. But many small festival committees used to immerse idols in irrigation canals.
The VMC, which is strictly implementing the Mission Krishna Godavari Canals, has passed orders against the immersion of POP idols in irrigation canals. Swachhagrahis were deployed at a few bridges in city to prevent people from immersing idols in canals.
Three huge cranes have been arranged at Prakasam barrage for immersion of idols. VMC urged the denizens to deposit pooja material like flower waste, banana stems and others at special counters arranged by them instead of dumping them into the river.
VMC will manufacture agarbattis and other pooja material out of the waste, the commissioner said.
“Ganesh Chaturthi is all about preserving nature. We will ensure that pooja material gets disposed of in the right way. POP idols will be immersed at one location to prevent water pollution. Fruits, flowers and other waste material will be composted at our units. We urge devotees to follow the instructions at Ganesh visarjan points,” Swapnil said.
Meanwhile, the district administration deployed expert swimmers at river ghats on the up and downstream of Prakasam barrage.
