Women trained to grow organic vegetables with biofertilizers
Varanasi: The Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development, Banaras Hindu University organised an awareness and training programme for biofertilizers production at houses for organic vegetable farming for women farmers at Madaiya village in Sevapuri block on Wednesday.The programme was organised by the principal investigator Jay Prakash Verma of IESD under the scheme of STI-HUB of DST, New Delhi with help of Suman Devi, Asha Aganbadi trainer.The project team conducted farmers’ meetings to create awareness about organic farming and kitchen gardening practices for producing leafy vegetables by use of biofertilizers. The team distributed best quality seeds of spinach, coriander, lauki, nanuwa and chaurahi and 60 ml liquid culture of biofertilizers to 60 women farmers. A lecture on the importance of biofertilizers and its demonstration with seed, seedling and soil treatments was given before the women farmers. The team also gave a demonstration of preparation of biofertilizers at home for mass multiplication and its application.Verma said that these biofertilizers are isolated and molecularly characterised from soils of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The impact of these biofertilizers has been tested on plant growth and production at plant growth chamber, pot and farmers field trials at Chandauli, Azamgarh, Jaunpur and Mirzapur. The women farmers can grow this vegetable at home. According to him, the biofertilizers will boost productivity, nutritional quality and soil health. This can be used as direct microbial culture and its product for soil, seed and foliar application for vegetables and other crop productivity. This will also enhance the immunity of plants against soil-borne phytopathogens.The project aims to provide chemical and pesticide free leafy vegetables to poor farmers for and enhance immunity.
