The four constituencies in Chandauli —

Mughalsarai

,

Saiyadraja

,

Sakaldiha

and Chakia — are going to polls in the last phase on March 7. The district has witnessed rallies of star campaigners like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others.

“We hope for a good harvest of

rabi crops

, similarly candidates of various parties expect bumper votes,” said Vishwanath, a farmer in Saiyadraja. “Though we elect our representatives in every election, the condition of the road in our village is still pathetic,” he lamented.

In 2017, BJP had won Mughalsarai, Saiyadraja and Chakia, while SP won Sakaldiha. This time, in Mughalsarai, BJP has dropped its sitting MLA Sadhana Singh and fielded Ramesh Jaiswal, while SP has fielded Chandra Shekhar Yadav. Congress has fielded BJP turncoat Chhabbu Patel while Irshad Ahmad is contesting on BSP ticket.

In Sakaldiha, BJP has fielded Suryamani Tiwari against SP’s sitting MLA Prabhunarayan Singh Yadav. Devendra Pratap Singh of Congress and Jayshyam Tripathi from BSP are also in the fray.

CHANDAULI: Two seats, Saiyadraja and Sakaldiha, have again become battlefields of muscleman politicians fielded by SP and BJP.

Saiyadraja, which came into existence after delimitation, was earlier known as Chandauli Sadar, and was represented by Congress stalwart Kamalapati Tripathi.

Now, this seat is known for the clash of dons. BJP has fielded its sitting MLA Sushil Singh, the nephew of jailed mafia don Brijesh Singh. SP has fielded muscleman Manoj Singh Dabloo, who had contested the 2012 election from jail as an Independent and defeated Brijesh Singh, who had contested as candidate of lesser-known Pragatisheel Manav Samaj Party.

In 2017, Sushil Singh won the seat by defeating another muscleman politician Shyam Narayan Singh alias Vineet Singh of BSP. Both the ‘Bahubalis’ are again vying for the support of the electorate dominated by Kshatriyas, followed by Dalits, Brahmins, Binds, Muslims and Rajbhars.

The Yadav-dominated Sakaldiha seat, known as Dhanapur before delimitation, has also been a battleground of bahubalis. In 2017, SP’s ‘dabang’ leader Prabhunarayan Yadav had defeated Suryamani Tiwari of BJP. Both are in the fray again. Sushil Singh had won this seat as Independent in 2012 and had also successfully contested the seat (then Dhanapur) on BSP ticket in 2007.
