VARANASI: The death toll in Nai Basti fire incident rose to three on Friday when a woman and her daughter succumbed to their burn injuries at SPG Hospital. It may be recalled here that after a mysterious explosion, the house of one Shanti Devi (50) had caught fire in a densely populated Nai Basti locality of Ramapura area under Luxa police station limits on Thursday afternoon.
During this incident, Manav, a one-and-a-half years old boy, was killed while his parents Amit Rathore and Meena and three others - Shanti, her daughter Annapurna and son Rakesh - had suffered serious burn injuries. They were all rushed to the SPG Hospital where Shanti and Annapurna died during the course of treatment on Friday. Amit and Meena were struggling for survival while some improvement was visible in the condition of Rakesh.
Boy run over: A boy, Shubham Kanojia (12), was run over by a truck when he was trying to receive sweets being distributed as 'prasad' from the vehicle during a 'Hanuman Dhwaja Yatra' in Naria area under Lanka police station limits on Friday. According to reports, Shubham, a class VI student and native of Naria, started running with the decorated truck from which the prasad was being distributed to the devotees standing along the road. The boy failed to notice a ditch and tumbled. In the meantime, the truck crushed him.
Man throws acid on family members: Nine women and girls of a family sustained burn injuries when a man threw acid on them in Jalalipura under Jaitpura police station on Friday. According to reports, Shafiunissa, a native of Jalalipura, and other members of her family were busy in preparations for the marriage of her daughter Shabnam, scheduled on Saturday. In the meantime, her husband Jakir Hussain reached there in an inebriated state and asked all the women members of the family to assemble at a place. When the women gathered, he threw acid on them from a bottle. Before he could succeed in opening other bottle of acid, Shafiunissa snatched it from him.
On hearing their cries, the neighbours and other family members reached there and rushed all the injured persons including Shafiunissa, Shabnam, Reshma, Rajia, Amin, Gudia and Shania to SPG Hospital. Shafiunissa told police that Jakir's brother Mobin Haji was influencing him to sell his house but all the family members were opposing it. She alleged that Jakir, who is a drunkard, had attacked the family members after his brother provoked him. Police were investigating the matter.
High drama in Chetganj: High drama was witnessed in Saraigowardhan locality under Chetganj police station limits on Friday when the locals raided a house and caught Prem Keshari and his tenant Nisha alleging that they were running a sex racket from their house. On receiving information of the incident, police reached the spot. Sensing the gravity of the matter, the cops took the man and his tenant under custody and took them to police station for interrogation.
Three criminals arrested: Azamgarh police nabbed some gangsters near Azmatgarg crossing in Razadepur locality under Jiyanpur police station limits on Friday. According to reports, acting on a tip-off, the police raided the locality and caught three criminals - Akhru-jama Khan, Saheb Singh Yadav and Ramesh Chandra Mishra, all natives of Azamgarh district. The police recovered nine pistols and 18 live cartridges from them. They were involved in a number of cases of murder, loot, abduction and narcotics smuggling.
