VARANASI: The Chetganj police on Saturday succeeded in busting a gang of vehicle-lifters and arrested its three members with nine stolen motorcycles, a countrymade revolver and live cartridges.
According to SP (city) MS Chauhan, acting on a tip-off, the Chetganj police raided a place near Ayurvedic Hostel of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in the wee hours when some miscreants had assembled there.
On seeing the police party, the thugs tried to escape. But, the police succeeded in nabbing three of them. They were identified as Anand Pathak from Ballia, Deepak Pandey from Bihar and Mantu Tiwari from Azamgarh. They were presently dwelling in rented houses in Chetganj and Sigra and lifting motorcycles from different localities in city area. During interrogation, they revealed the places where they had hidden the lifted motorcycles.
Detonators recovered: The Sayyedraja police in Chandauli district succeeded in nabbing two persons when they were trying to cross the state border for Bihar with a consignment of detonators. According to IG (range) RP Singh, during a checking drive, the Sayyedraja police noticed two youths heading towards the Bihar border with a big bag. On seeing the police, the two made an abortive bid to escape. They were identified as Maan Singh Chauhan and Sonu Chauhan of Robertsganj, Sonebhadra.
When their bag was checked, the police recovered 530 detonators. During interrogation, the arrested youths revealed that they had collected detonators from one Anil Maurya in Sukrit area to deliver to someone in Bihar. Police said whether the detonators were being taken to a Maoist group or for mining purpose had not become clear so far. Police were trying to trace Maurya.
