VARANASI: Three prisoners of Ghazipur district jail were admitted to district hospital on Monday evening following sharp deterioration in their health. It was suspected that they could have consumed some poisonous substance.
According to reports, Ram Bachan alias Fauzi (30), a murder accused, is lodged in barrack-II while Vasim (22) and Guddu (30) are lodged in barrack-VI.
On Monday morning, Ram Bachan and Vasim were taken to the district court for hearing. After returning to jail, Ram Bachan, Vasim and Guddu were seen near the jail canteen where they consumed soft drink.
After some time, their health started deteriorating. The incident brought jail authorities to their toes. District jailer Sitaram Gautam rushed them to district hospital. On receiving information, in-charge district magistrate Bholanath Mishra, SP Ghazipur L Ravi Kumar and several other officers arrived at the jail.
The SP, who was interrogating other inmates, told TOI over phone that other prisoners were saying that the three had consumed soft drink at jail canteen. "Whether it was the drink that made them fall ill, is a matter of investigation," he said.
