VARANASI: It is not very often that one comes across a visually impaired person in an art exhibition and when one does, it is natural that the experience of that person while feeling the art creations becomes valuable. "I felt structure of a rose in one of the works and a kite in another," said Neha (name changed). The experience has encouraged her to go for more such exhibitions, she added.
At 'Expression through threads', an exhibition of the textile art works from the student of the faculty of visual arts,
Banaras Hindu University, a visually impaired girl felt all the creations displayed there. In fact one of the artist Atreyee Basu created her textile art piece keeping, in the mind how a painting or an art piece can be appreciated by those who can not see.
According to Mridula Sinha of faculty of visual arts,
BHU, the exhibition is unique in many ways. "The kind of works displayed at the exhibition have assigned a completely new meaning to the traditional weaving. At the same time, some new knots have been created and used by the students to create these pieces. There is a tremendous market possibilities for these textile art works as a lot of people are showing interest in decorating their living spaces with these," said Sinha.
Some interesting pieces with techniques like tie and dye, batik prints, various knots and weaves were used to showcase the pieces. In a creation of Jyoti Srivastava, a final year student of master of fine arts (MFA), traditional weaving and textile patterns of Banaras have been used to depict the culture of the city and the Ganga ghats. Other works were based on the themes like beautiful world of the corals under the sea-surface, unity in diversity, cultural aspect of India including its mystic elements.
