Varanasi: Muslims observed the 10th day of
Muharram on Tuesday with religious fervour and solemnity.
Processions started from several localities of the city in the morning and reached Faatman graveyard till late evening. A huge crowd gathered on the roads to witness processions of famous Rangewali, Naginewali, Peetal and Motiwali tazia on Faatman road.
In rural areas, a tazia procession was carried out in Shahanshahpur.
One of the tazias was painted in tricolour and participants waved national flag as the procession passed.
Barring minor incidents, tazia processions were taken out peacefully.
A group of BHU students staged a sit-in at the proctorial board office after a tazia procession entered the campus from Chhittupur gate on Tuesday and passed through law school and Mahila Mahavidyalay crossings before making an exit through the main gate.
Some messages were allegedly posted on social media to oppose the move but were removed after a few minutes.
Staging protest at the proctorial board office, the students alleged that the university administration was disturbing the atmosphere of the campus by allowing tazia processions.
Chief proctor OP Rai met the students and informed them that such processions were allowed to pass through the campus in the past too.
In a separate incident at Saraiyya Imambada, two groups taking out processions clashed in an attempt to move ahead of each other. Police had to resort to mild force to control the situation.
In Kundariya area of Jansa, SDM Amrita Singh and circle officer, Sadar, Satyendra Tiwari had to convince participants of a procession to take the new route decided in the peace committee meeting.
