Seminar held on neglected tropical diseases
Varanasi: On the occasion of World NTD (Neglected Tropical Diseases) Day, a seminar was held in the auditorium of chief medical officer's (CMO) office on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, CMO Dr Sandeep Chaudhary stated that the theme for this year's NTD diseases is ‘Unite Act Eliminate'. This includes diseases like lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis), kala azar, leprosy, dengue, chikungunya, snakebite, rabies, leptospirosis, trachoma, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis, which can be prevented. He said that NTDs are a group of diseases that adversely affect life, primarily impacting the poor and vulnerable populations. Although these diseases can be prevented, they still cause deaths or disabilities every year. This day is observed to raise awareness among the public.Additional CMO Dr S S Kanaujia said that the day was also celebrated at all block CHCs and PHCs in the district. He urged people to inform their local ASHA worker and visit a govt hospital if they notice symptoms of these diseases, to ensure timely treatment and control.Biologist Dr Amit Kumar Singh explained that most diseases included in NTDs are caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and protozoa, affecting the world's poor populations where there is a lack of information. Many diseases can be avoided by maintaining cleanliness around one's home.
