VARANASI: Protests erupted at the Banaras Hindu University campus after some unidentified persons painted freedom fighter

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar

with black ink after throwing it on the floor at old PG building of the social science faculty.

The protests started when the students of MA (Political Science) Semester-I noticed the photo on entering the classroom on Monday. Later, ABVP members also reached there to join them.

On getting information about the incident, dean of social science faculty Professor RP Pathak interacted with the students.

Pathak told TOI on Tuesday, "Targeting Savarkar's picture was intentional as not other pictures of other personalities including Dr BR Ambedkar, Acharya Narendradev or others had been disturbed in the room."

In view of the bid to disturb the faculty's atmosphere, a three-member committee has been formed to look into the matter, the dean said.

The university administration assured the students that necessary measures would be initiated to identify persons involved in the act. Later, the students called off their agitation.
