Police crack down on silencer tweaks, defective number plates
Varanasi: A special checking campaign was conducted on Thursday on the directions of Varanasi police commissioner, Mohit Agrawal. The police took action to stop the use of modified silencers on two-wheelers, devices producing excessive noise, and vehicles without or with defective number plates. Chetganj police checked six shops and seized 10 excessively noisy modified silencers. Police also seized one vehicle under section 207 MV Act, and registered cases against the shopkeepers concerned. Cantt police seized 10 modified silencers during the checking of one shop, seized one vehicle and registered cases against shopkeepers.
A total of 44 challans were issued and a fine of Rs 1,03,500 was imposed on 50 vehicles with modified silencers, while six were seized. Meanwhile, 264 challans and a fine of Rs 8,34,700 were imposed on 279 vehicles without or with defective number plates, while 15 were seized.Additionally, the police also conducted a seven-hour operation in the Ganga on Thursday. Boats were inspected for passenger capacity, life jackets and pollution. A total of 173 boats were checked in and 13 were seized for violating standards and rules. Boat operators' identity cards were verified, and their age was also checked. Safety equipment was also inspected during the operation and 15 boats were found without life jacket arrangements. Some boats had jackets, but they were insufficient in proportion to the number of passengers. Engine-powered boats were inspected separately. Additional CP (law and order), Shivhari Meena said that a large number of people, devotees and tourists from India and abroad take boat rides at the Ganga ghats. In such circumstances, special operations are conducted from time to time by the police administration for passenger safety, prevention of potential accidents and cleanliness of the Ganga.
