VARANASI: The activists of Jan Sangharsh Morcha (JSM) began a two-day fast on the issue of weavers' plight at the district headquarters on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering, JSM convener Akhilendra Pratap Singh accused the government of compelling weavers to starve and alleged that the weaving industry was being destroyed due to the wrong policies of the government.
"The children of weaver community have been suffering from malnutrition and a number of weavers do not have BPL cards," he said and added the JSM would intensify agitation if the interests of weavers were not protected.
Their main demands included enlisting each weaver family on BPL list, red ration cards to all weaver families, power waiver and proper power supply. Many JSM activists, including Tilakdhari Bind, Dinkar Kapur, Shehnawaz, Virendra Yadav of Rashtriya Ekta Party and others, sat on fast.
