IIT-BHU to host football, hockey matches from Fri

Varanasi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), BHU will organise hockey and football matches in the institute from August 25 to 27 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand and mark the upcoming National Sports Day on August 29. The hockey and football matches will be held between the teams of IIT-BHU students and different clubs. The teams will be named after freedom fighters.
IIT-BHU Sports counselor Surya Dev Yadav said the Sports Week is being observed across the country from August 21 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the theme ‘Sports: The pillar of an inclusive and healthy society’. The observation will continue till August 29.
He said the hockey matches will be organised from 5pm to 7pm from August 25 to 27 while the football matches will be held from 2pm to 6pm on August 26 and 27. Dean, student welfare, Prof LP Singh will inaugurate the competition at Gymkhana Ground of the institute on August 25.
IIT-BHU director Prof Pramod Kumar Jain said playing sports not only improves fitness of the students, but playing as a team also inculcates the qualities of team spirit and healthy competition.
