VARANASI: The Federation of Other Backward Classes (OBC) Employees Welfare Associations, Uttar Pradesh, will organise a felicitation function on Sunday to honour OBC candidates from UP and Bihar who have been selected in the civil services examination.

Talking to mediapersons on Saturday, general secretary of the federation Amritanshu said August 7, 1990 was a historical day when the then Prime Minister VP Singh had announced 27% reservation in the Parliament for the OBCs in government services. He said the main objective of the programme was to instil a sense of dignity as well as responsibility in the selected OBC candidates.

National general secretary G Karunanidhy said the representation of OBC in government jobs had increased after the implementation of the recommendation of the Mandal Commission in 1993. But, their representation was yet on not up to the mark.
According to them, K Veeramani, president of Dravidar Kazhagam, Chennai and chancellor of Periyar Maniyammai University, Thanjavur, and SK Kharventhan, member of National Commission of Backward classes will attend the function.
