In a late night incident on Thursday, at least five kanwariyas were killed while four others sustained severe injuries when a truck hit their vehicle near Jalalpur crossing under Mardah police station in Ghazipur district.

VARANASI: In a late night incident on Thursday, at least five kanwariyas were killed while four others sustained severe injuries when a truck hit their vehicle near Jalalpur crossing under Mardah police station in Ghazipur district.
According to reports, nine kanwariys hailing from Chauri-Chaura in Gorakhpur district were returning home in a small passenger vehicle from Varanasi on Thursday night.

When their vehicle was passing through Jalalpur Crossing, a truck hit it from the opposite direction. Four kanwariyas- Ranjit Jaiswal, Roshan Vishwakarma, Anil and Akku- died on the spot while driver Brijesh Gupta died on the way to hospital.
Seriously injured kanwariyas, including Vijay Jaiswal, Sandip Singh, Lalit Kumar and Brijesh, were admitted to local hospital. Receiving the information SP Ghazipur L Ravi Kumar reached the incident site. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
Body found: Body of one Kuldeep Singh (85), a retired engineer of Narainpur under Shivpur police station area, was found floating in Varuna river near Varuna bridge under Cantonment police station on Friday morning. The cause of death could not be ascertained. His family members revealed that he was mentally disturbed and missing since Thursday evening.
