Drug smuggler nabbed with charas worth Rs27L

Varanasi: In a major crackdown on interstate drug smuggling, the UP Special Task Force and Rohania police jointly arrested a notorious smuggler, Rambabu, with a massive haul of 5.400 kg of Charas worth Rs 27 lakhs near Mohansarai underpass here on Saturday.According to the STF, a joint action was carried out with Rohania police after collecting inputs regarding the movement of drug smugglers. Rambabu, a resident of Jaitpura, was found to be part of an organized gang operating in Varanasi. The gang sourced Charas, ganja, hashish, smack, and other substances from Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, and the Nepal border. They would supply these drugs in Varanasi and surrounding districts, and also transport them to different parts of the country via buses and trains.During interrogation, Rambabu revealed that the gang's leaders, Devendra Kumar Mishra and Mahendra Mishra alias Chhotu, would procure drugs from Tanu in Himachal Pradesh and distribute them through delivery boys Mukesh Mishra alias Shyam and Mitthu. The police also recovered two mobile phones from Rambabu. This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation that has already led to the arrest of two smugglers, Santosh Kumar Jha and Shikha Verma, with 5.628 kg of Charas on Jan 28.The STF had succeeded in arresting Jha and Verma, following which the investigation led to Rambabu's arrest. tnn
