VARANASI: A 24-year-old man from Jaunpur allegedly chopped off a part of his left foot in an apparent bid to claim disability benefits for NEET medical admission. He initially lied to police, claiming that he had been attacked.
Cops discovered the shocking act of desperation through his diary and from his girlfriend’s statement.
Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur (Line Bazar area), had completed D-Pharma and had been preparing for NEET. On Jan 18, he told cops that he had been attacked and his left foot had been severed, leaving only the heel. Based on this, police registered an FIR and launched a probe, CO City Goldie Gupta said.
When quizzed, Suraj repeatedly changed his statements , raising suspicion. Police then found his diary in which he would pen down goals before any task. There, he had written about aiming for MBBS admission in 2026, and about filling out a marriage registration form, which he had kept with him.
Cops later checked his call records and learnt about his girlfriend. During questioning, she told police that Suraj was desperate to secure MBBS admission by 2026. In Oct last year, he had visited BHU to obtain disability paperwork but failed. Apparently frustrated, Suraj decided to cut off his foot, allegedly using a machine .
Police searched the underconstruction house and its surroundings, but couldn’t find the severed foot. Some injections were discovered in the field, possibly anaesthetics. Suraj knew how to administer injections, so he may have first injected anaesthetics to numb the pain before cutting his foot, police said.
Probe revealed that Suraj called his family around 5am, but they didn’t answer. He then rang a relative’s phone, and that’s how the family learned about the injury.
He was admitted to a private hospital in Jaunpur, where he underwent surgery, Gupta said. Once discharged, his statement will be recorded. Police said a case will be registered against him for misleading investigators. Legal action would follow.
