Varanasi: The deadlock between agitating students of Ayurveda Faculty, Institute of Medical Science-Banaras Hindu University and university administration over increase in PG seats continued on the 13th day on Wednesday.
In support of their demand, the students have been staging dharna near the VC residence on the campus for the last 12 days. They also locked the OPD on Tuesday. On the other hand, the university authorities termed the students’ agitation as an act of sheer indiscipline, and appealed to them to go back to the classes and continue their studies.
The Ayurveda students said that they have been raising the issue of PG seat increase for the last two years, but the university administration turned a deaf ear to their demand. “We will continue our agitation until the university submits the registration fee for increased seats of PG courses,” said one of the students Vijay Maurya, adding that the last date of the registration is October 31. The university is not ready to spend money for the registration of increased PG seats, alleged the students. According to the notification of the union ministry of Ayush, the institution willing to submit applications may apply from October 1 to 31. The institution will have to deposit the prescribed non-refundable fee to increase admission capacity. The institution is required to deposit Rs five lakh per speciality for the increase in post-graduate courses. “The agitation of students is not only an act of serious indiscipline but also a crime,” said the dean of the Ayurveda Faculty, Prof. KN Dwivedi, adding that their act of locking the OPD and disrupting the patient care cannot be justified in any manner. “There is no problem in depositing the registration fee, which is Rs. 80 lakhs for the 16 departments (Rs. five lakh foe each department),” he said. The university is ready for it, but, what if the approval of UGC for the increased seats is not received, he questioned, adding that the approval of UGC is essential before the registration for seat increasing.
“We are trying our best to do in favour of the students, but they are adamant on the stand. By doing so, they are not only committing crime but also losing sympathy from the faculty and society as well,” said the dean, adding that they are appealed to give up their rigid attitude and join their classes.
