Dalit youth assaulted, loses eyesight in one eye in UP's Bhadohi over defecating dispute
BHADOHI: A Dalit youth in UP's Bhadohi was brutally attacked, losing sight in his left eye after an argument over defecating near a canal escalated into violence, police said on Monday.
The victim, Rahul, early 20s, was referred in critical condition from the district hospital to Varanasi on Sunday for advanced treatment.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Aurai area when Rahul went to a canal to relieve himself. An argument broke out with the accused, Shankar Bind, who objected to Rahul defecating near the canal. The dispute escalated as Bind allegedly used caste-based slurs and assaulted Rahul.
According to SP Abhimanyu Manglik, “When Rahul tried to escape, the accused allegedly pierced a motorcycle key in his left eye and threatened to kill him, and he collapsed on the ground in severe pain.”
The attacker fled the scene as locals gathered. Police arrived after receiving information and initially shifted Rahul to a community health centre before he was admitted to the district hospital.
“As the injury to his left eye was severe, and he complained of loss of vision, doctors on Sunday referred him to the BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi,” Manglik added.
A case has been registered by the victim’s father, Ram Dhani, against Shankar Bind under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. “Necessary legal action against the accused is being taken, and further investigation is underway,” the SP said.
