NEW DELHI: Car-borne assailants shot at a bullion trader and his son before looting a bag containing jewellery in the Kamchha area of Varanasi on Sunday morning.
Both victims are reported to be stable after receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The incident occurred around 3.30am when Deepak Soni (46), a bullion trader from Gurudham Colony, was returning home from Varanasi railway station.
After arriving from Mumbai with a bag full of jewellery, Soni was riding a scooter with his son when a car overtook them. The occupants of the car opened fire at the father and son before fleeing the scene with the stolen bag, said Gaurav Bansal, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Kashi Zone.
Both Soni and his son sustained injuries from the gunfire and were rushed to the BHU Trauma Centre, where they are reported to be out of danger.
Authorities have launched a probe into the incident, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the assailants.
