‘Bladder cancer cases on rise due to increase in tobacco use’
Varanasi: A preceptorship programme on Bladder Cancer was organized at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (MPMMCC & HBCH), Varanasi on Saturday. The programme was inaugurated by the director Prof S Pradhan and conducted by the Uro Oncology Disease Management Group, under the supervision of Dr Akhil Kapoor, Medical Oncologist and officer in Charge, MPMMCC.Dr Kapoor said that May is observed as bladder cancer awareness month and it is an important indication that needs to be talked about as the incidences of bladder cancer are increasing primarily due to increased consumption of tobacco and other associated products and sedentary lifestyle.According to Dr Kapoor, more than 1,000 patients with bladder cancer visited MPMMCC, Varanasi in 2022 and the number is rising sharply. It is expected to be more than double in the year 2023. The treatment of bladder cancer can be very effective if the disease is detected at an earlier stage. The programme witnessed key insights from Dr Shashikant Patne, Dr SN Singh, Dr Shashank Saini, Dr Rahul Rai, Dr Himanshu Pandey, Dr Lincoln Pujari, Dr Amit Kumar from Patna, Dr Pooja Gupta, Dr Bipinesh Sansar, Dr BK Mishra, Dr Anuj Gupta, Dr Lalit Agarwa of BHU, Dr Prashant G, Dr Manikandan, Dr Pooja Pandey, Dr Shreya Shukla, Dr Divya, Dr Kunal Vinayak, Dr Somnath Dey and Vivek Sharma from Mumbai who supports Bladder Cancer India- a support group for bladder cancer patients and caregivers. The preceptorship program is supported by Mumbai-based Indian Oncology Cooperative Network (ICON Trust) and Pravin Jagtap from ICON Trust was also present.
