Varanasi: A scientist of
medicinal chemistry
at the Banaras Hindu University Dr
Nazar Hussain has bagged a project of SERB-DST to carry out research on the cost-effective anti-diabetic drugs by new routes. The study will explore the possibilities of combining polyphenols with carbohydrates to test anti-viral activities.
According to the
BHU authorities, Dr Nazar Hussain, assistant professor, department of Medicinal Chemistry,
Institute of Medical Sciences
, BHU will carry out the research on C-glycosides synthesis.
Dr Hussain said that C-glycosides are the derivatives of carbohydrates which are widely used in the treatment of diabetes. He will get a grant of over Rs 40 lakh for his research. Along with the synthesis of anti-diabetic drugs the project also aims at synthesizing some polyphenolic C- glycosides. Polyphenolic compounds are known in the treatment of various viral infections.
The study will also explore the possibility of combining polyphenols with carbohydrates to test their anti-viral activities against different viral infections including
Covid
, he said adding, this will be one of the major studies of its kind in the country.
