‘BHU & Nepal have long-standing academic and cultural ties’
Varanasi: A three-day International Conference on the theme ‘Democracy in Transition: Nepal's Political Dilemmas and Prospects', commenced on Friday at Banaras Hindu University under the aegis of the Centre for the Study of Nepal, department of Political Science. The conference brought together eminent scholars, policy experts, and researchers from India and Nepal to deliberate on the evolving dynamics of democracy and political transformation in Nepal.Addressing the inaugural session, Vice-chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi spoke about the long-standing academic and cultural ties between Nepal and BHU. He recalled historical connections between the university and Nepal and shared an anecdote illustrating how academic affiliations between institutions in Nepal and BHU existed even a century ago. The keynote address was delivered by noted scholar and former diplomat Prof S D Muni, who presented a comprehensive analysis of Nepal's democratic evolution and the challenges it continues to face. He discussed the four different phases of Nepal's political transformation and highlighted the role of institutions, leadership, socio-economic dynamics, and regional geopolitics in shaping the democratic process. He opined that democracy is not a perfect system; it is often flawed and chaotic, yet it remains the most viable framework through which societies negotiate political power, participation, and accountability. He further emphasised the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring inclusive govt, and sustaining public participation for the consolidation of democracy.Welcoming the participants, Prof Amarnath Mohanty, head of the department of Political Science, highlighted the revival of the Centre for the Study of Nepal and its renewed academic engagement. He noted that the Centre, which was once a vibrant hub of scholarly activity, is now being revitalised with the encouragement of the university administration. Referring to Nepal's democratic journey, he stated that the transition from monarchy to a federal democratic republic represents a significant political transformation and opens new avenues for political freedom, social justice, and institutional restructuring.
