, where till now lovebirds would nestle. The BHU administration, vide a notification dated January 6, has designated the park located near faculty of music and performing arts as the new site for protests by students, teaching and non-teaching staff.

BHU spokesman Rajesh Singh said the decision was taken after district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma, in the light of a high court order, asked the university to identify a spot for protests on campus.

“The committee, formed by vice-chancellor Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar, unanimously decided to designate Madhuban park as protest site,” he added.

In the absence of a protest site, the campus had been witnessing demonstrations near central office, main gate at Lanka, Holkar Bhawan and VC’s residence which not only affected academic activities but also work at BHU hospital.

“Notification has been circulated to all institutes, faculties, hotels and colleges on the campus to make students, teaching and non-teaching staff aware that staging protest at any place other than Madhuban park will be considered as an act of indiscipline and punitive action will be initiated as per rules,” Singh said.

Till now, Madhuban park was an attraction for young couples given its landscaping and greenery. However, as the park is located along residential quarters of university staff, their activities used to irk residents.Admitting that residents lodged complaints against nuisance created by couples, chief proctor Prof OP Rai said the university administration had decided in 2014 to develop Madhuban as children’s park to solve the menace
