VADODARA: While the city might be touted as the seat of education, the performance of Vadodara district was average on the literacy front in the last decade. Provisional data of the 2011 census reveals that it has retained its ranking in the district of the state as compared to the 2001 census.
The overall literacy rate in the district was 70.76 per cent and it was ranked 10th in the state in 2001.
It has retained the place in 2011 with the provisional data indicating that the literacy rate in the district has gone up to 81.21 per cent.
The male literacy rate in the district in 2001 was 80.04 per cent and this rose to 87.59 in the 2011 census. The district was ranked 11 on this front in 2001. In the 2011 provisional data released recently, this ranking improved to 10.
However, on the female literacy front the district's performance has gone down marginally. The district was ranked ninth in 2001 with a female literacy rate of 60.73.
This improved significantly in 211 and reached 74.4 per cent, but its ranking slipped to 11. This was owing to better performances on this front by some other districts.
The total number of literates in the district was 29,90,876 against a population of 41,57,568. This excludes children in the age group up to six years. The total number of male literates stood at 16,64,022 while that of female literates was 13,26,854 as per the provisional figures.
