VADODARA: Several ex-cricketers from the city may soon get huge amount of cash from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The
BCCI's one-time benefit scheme of paying ex-test and first-class players from
Indian Premier League (
IPL) profits will benefit these players who have retired before 2003-04 season.
Among the ex-cricketers who are eligible for the scheme are Anshuman Gaekwad, D K Gaekwad, Nayan Mongia, Narayan Satham, Tushar Arothe and Kiran More. Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) secretary, Sanjay Patel said, "We have got intimation about payments to Anshuman Gaekwad and Arothe. Gaekwad will be paid Rs 60 lakh while Arothe will get Rs 30 lakh. They will be paid on May 22 during the first play-off match of IPL."
When asked about other players, Patel said the BCA is yet to get any information about them.
The scheme, applicable to players who retired before the 2003-04 season, would benefit hundreds of ex-cricketers across the country. Former Bsecretary Jaywant Lele, however, said, "D K Gaekwad, Satham, More and Mongia too are eligible. Though Mongia retired in 2004 he didn't played any international match after 2001. More, who had joined rebel ICL, has been getting pension from BCCI so he too would be eligible."
Lele added, "I talked with BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale and he told me that the BCCI is still working out details of the scheme. They are finalizing list of players and announcement will be made within three to four days."
Interestingly, Dattajirao Gaekwad had captained India in test matches and is one of the oldest Indian skippers to be alive. However, he has not got any intimation of payment. "My father has not got any intimation of payment from BCCI yet," said Dattajirao's son, Anshuman Gaekwad. Anshuman has played 40 test matches, 15 one day internationals (ODIs) and 206 first class games.
Dattajirao has played 11 test matches and 110 first-class games. Mongia has played 44 test matches, 140 ODIs and 158 first-class games. Arothe has played 114 first-class games. More has played 49 tests, 94 ODIs and 151 first-class games. Satham, Baroda's ex-captain played 84 first class matches.
Under the BCCI scheme, domestic players who have played 100 and more first-class games will be awarded Rs 30 lakhs, while those who have played 75-99 first-class matches will get Rs 25 lakh each.
