A search squad of the jail found the mobile phones hidden under earthen roof tiles in yard 11. According to officials, one mobile phone was found hidden under the tiles over a window in barrack 4, while four more cellphones were found from different roof tiles over different windows in barrack 3.

Along with the mobile phones, the squad also found two mobile phone chargers and a battery.

While it is still being investigated how these had been smuggled in or who owns the phones, officials’ probe revealed that the phones were being used Salim alias Salman Zarda, Sajid Hussain Arab and Tausif Miya Malek.

Zarda, a native of Godhra, has been in jail for his involvement in the 2002
