Vadodara: Around 4,500 sportspersons will participate in the Mayor Cup sports meet to be held in the city from Monday.

The city-level event is the first of its kind effort by the

Vadodara Municipal Corporation

(VMC) to promote sports in the city.

The sports meet includes 23 disciplines that include both team and individual games. The games will be played at 10 different venues in the city and associations of 23 different sports have supported it.

The team games included in the meet are cricket, basketball, football, hockey, handball, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball and others. Individual disciplines included in the event include judo, karate, wrestling, swimming, skating, chess, athletics, karate, shooting, cycling, table tennis, badminton, tennis, bodybuilding, gymnastics, fencing and others.

The VMC has formed 13 different committees to oversee the preparations. The members of these committees include over 60 VMC officials. As many as 573 officials deputed by the participating sporting associations will oversee the proceedings.

The VMC will award 2,300 medals and certificates to winners at the meet. Eighty trophies will also be given away at the end of the event. The event will be inaugurated on Sunday morning at the Manjalpur sports complex by minister of state for sports

The opposition Congress, meanwhile, objected to the fact that no receipts were being given to sportspersons for participation fees in the cricket tournament.
