VADODARA: 'Pachad na pade tari, chokro eh kevo, Jo baka koi ni male tane mara jevo..' goes the rap version of 'Jo baka'. Cashing in on the growing popularity of the gujarati meme that is going viral on social media, a city-based rapping artist has composed a song on 'Jo Baka.' Pratique Vaghela has composed the song to introduce Gujarati hip hop in the genre of rap music.
'Jo Baka' roughly translated as 'see my friend' went onto become an online viral sensation on social media recently with over 3.5 lakh unique memes created by users. 'Baka' is an average Gujarati, who is seen dishing out philosophy or commenting on contemporary issues.
"Jo Baka, which is a regular phrase used in Vadodara and Ahmedabad, went onto become a catchphrase in the state because of the viral popularity on social networking websites, online communities and groups. I wanted to mould the phrase into a song for masses. It's just for fun," Vaghela told TOI.
"By imbibing the element of Navratri festival in the song lyrics, I have tried to bring out the flavour of Gujarat and connect with the crowd. Through the 'Jo baka' song, I have made an effort to make the Gujarati music popular among the younger crowd," Vaghela said.
"The rap genre of music has caught the fancy of youngsters, with young artists in the city getting innovative and rapping in regional languages. When we talk of Gujarati music, Garba is the only thing that comes to mind. I wanted to break that perception by proving that the language can also be used as a medium for hip hop though this song," said Vaghela. Vaghela is one of the very few artists from the city who raps in the regional language.
