VADODARA: The crime branch sleuths on Sunday arrested two persons, who posed as National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) president and anti-corruption bureau cop. The duo had duped Sheela Bhatt, who had contested in taluka polls of Padra some months ago by threatening to defame her. They had taken Rs three lakh cash and Scorpio car from her. Interestingly, the duo was arrested on the basis of confessions made by Bhavna Bhatt, who was arrested earlier for posing as deputy collector.
Bhavna, sister of Sheela, has been accused of accepting money from youngsters and cheating them by promising government jobs.
The duo identified as Rambhavan Oza, a resident of Ahmedabad, and Anuj Vyas, resident of Panchmahals, had approached Sheela ahead of taluka polls. “They introduced themselves as NHRC officer and ACB men and told Sheela that they can spoil her chances in the polls by defaming her. The duo said they would use her sister’s arrest against her. They also promised Sheela that all the cases against Bhavna would be closed,” said DCP (crime) Ashok Yadav.
“Afraid, Sheela paid up the cash and gave away the car. When Bhavna was under interrogation she told us about the duo. We registered an FIR at crime branch and started looking for them,” Yadav told TOI. Investigations and Oza’s questioning revealed that earlier too a case had been registered against him.
Ahmedabad for posing as government officer and driving a car with yellow beacon.
The cops suspect that Oza and Vyas have cheated a number of people in Ahmedabad and Vadodara earlier by using fake identity cards. “We request victims to come forward and registered complaint against them,” Yadav added.
