In an unprecedented move, the civic body had sealed four small temples in the Sayajigunj and state transport (ST) depot areas on Monday.

The move had raked up a major row with the opposition Congress raising the issue in the general board meeting as well as making representations to mayor Bharat Dangar demanding opening of the seals.

Congress spokesman Nilesh Brahmbhatt said that the mayor had told them that he had discussed the matter with the VMC administration.

"He has promised that the seals will be opened. But since this did not happen till Tuesday evening, we have decided to start an agitation," said Brahmbhatt.

The Congress will he holding a 'Ram Dhun' chanting at the VMC headquarters at Khanderao Market on Wednesday.

It has threatened to intensify the agitation in the future to ensure that the seals are opened. "Sealing vitiates the atmosphere of the city and can lead to tension," said Brahmbhatt.

This is not the first time that the Congress has raised the issue of action by VMC on temples in the city. It had earlier conducted an agitation over the razing of a hanuman temple on the site in Sama where a housing scheme for the urban poor is coming up.
