Udaipur school boy stabbed by classmate succumbs to injuries
Minister of state for home Jawahar Singh Bedham told TOI that the boy could not be saved despite the efforts of a special team of doctors constituted to treat him.
The victim, a Class 10 student at the Govt Higher Secondary School Bhattiyani Chauhatta in Girwa area, was stabbed by his classmate with a knife over an old enmity around 10.30am on Aug 16.
Till Monday morning, the doctors had maintained that the boy was critical but stable and the city was returning to normalcy. To celebrate the Raksha Bandhan festival, the student’s sister Suhani and cousins had tied ‘rakhi’ on him around 2.15pm on Monday — after receiving the collector’s approval — and offered prayers. The student’s health, however, deteriorated rapidly around 3pm.
The news of the boy's death later put the police and administration on high alert.
An agreement was eventually reached after the administration assured the deceased's family of financial compensation amounting to Rs 51 lakh, contract employment for a family member, and legal action against culprits under the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act as the deceased boy belonged to the SC category.
The administration agreed to forward the employment request to the state govt. Following this, the family agreed to conduct the postmortem.
“The boy’s funeral will take place at 7am on Tuesday,” said Jayanti Lal Mochi, a community leader, to the media late Monday night.
Earlier, members of various organisations had assembled at the emergency gate of the hospital, questioning the ‘sudden’ declaration of the boy’s death when it was previously informed that he would be transferred to Delhi or Jaipur for further treatment.
They also accused the administration for ‘misleading’ them for four days.
Udaipur Range IG Ajaypal Lamba issued a plea to protesters to maintain calm and cautioned them of police action.
Divisional commissioner Rajeev Bhatt confirmed that the doctors had made every effort to save the child, but the severity of injuries and the extensive blood loss made them futile.
