Saving Aravalli hills: Udaipur admn on toes after govt seeks report

Udaipur: The home department has asked the Udaipur district administration to provide a comprehensive report on the issue of encroachments on Aravalli hills surrounding the Lake-City within 15 days.This order, issued by Aparna Gupta, the joint administrative secretary of the home (Group-5) department, says the district administration’s report must include the names of the govt employees who have been aiding the land mafia in the illegal excavation of the Aravalli hills.A day after the order came, divisional commissioner Rajendra Bhatt convened a high-level meeting on Thursday with top officials and instructed them to heighten action against illegal cutting of the hill, seize machinery used for it such as JCBs, and start night-time monitoring. The meeting was attended by IG Ajay Pal Lamba, district collector Arvind Poswal, UDA commissioner Rahul Jain, and additional divisional commissioner CR Dewasi, among others.Bhatt also asked the officials to initiate strict measures against unauthorised colonies or resorts operating without permission in the Aravalli region. He also ordered spot inspections in response to complaints and submission of situation reports to facilitate appropriate follow-up action. He ordered confiscation of equipment and machinery found being used in illegal cutting of the hills and imposition of fines by the mines department. As per Bhatt’s order, the district administration is forming a team to scrutinise activities in various areas to investigate possible involvement between govt officials and the land mafia.
