UDAIPUR: Following the murder of a tailor, Kanhaiya Lal, here on Tuesday afternoon, police and the district administration had a tough time maintaining law and order in the city. The news of the murder spread like wildfire through video clips shared on social media and people in large number gathered around the area in support of the deceased. The agitators went around the old city shouting slogans and closing down establishments.

Soon after the murder, Udaipur SP Manoj Kumar and district collector Tarachand Meena reached the spot and tried to convince the relatives and other people to shift the body to hospital. The agitating crowd did not allow police to lift the body till late night and demanded compensation and a government job for the son of the deceased who is 19 years old.

The crowd went around the city closing down all establishments shouting slogans and demanded immediate arrest of the accused. The crowd gathered outside Hathipole and Maldas Street and clashed with police on several occasions. The crowd burnt tyres on streets. Incident of stone pelting on a mosque in Hathipole area was also reported in which seven persons were injured.

Police and the district administration on several occasions tried to convince the agitating crowd. Additional police forces were deployed in various areas of the city. Internet services in city were shut down for 24 hours.

After incidents of stone pelting and vehicles being set on fire, curfew was imposed in seven police station areas of the city. Indefinite curfew was imposed in Dhanmandi, Ghantaghar, Ambamata, Surajpole, Bhupalpura, Hathipole and Savina areas. Keeping in view the competitive exams, Section 144 was imposed in the entire district.

Despite several rounds of discussions, police till late in the night were unable to convince relatives for shifting the body of the deceased from the crime spot to the mortuary. The relatives were adamant on providing a government job and monetary compensation to the kin of the deceased. The body was finally shifted around 10pm.

Late in the evening, police after an intensive search detained the two accused from Bhim area in Rajsamand district. The accused have been identified as Gaus Mohammed and Riyaz, both residents of Surajpole area in Udaipur city.
