Trichy: After being elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha (RS) from Tamil Nadu, Congress MP Christopher Manickam said in Trichy on Saturday that he would coordinate with other elected representatives to raise Tamil Nadu's demands in Delhi. Stating that he would soon start interacting with people and functionaries, Manickam said he would focus on Trichy's development.
"The
Congress party and the high command identified me, a candidate from a normal background, for a responsible post. I will fulfil their expectations. I will raise my voice for Tamil Nadu's needs and serve as a proactive MP. The recognition is not just for me but for grassroots cadres too," Manickam said.
The MP worked as a merchandiser in the garment industry in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East until 2008 before entering politics. He is AICC secretary in charge of Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Manickam received a warm welcome from Congress functionaries headed by urban district president L Rex in Trichy.
The 53-year-old maintained a low profile in the city and state since he was associated with party activities in other states, mostly in Kerala, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, since 2009. "There are several MPs in the district. I will work closely with them," he added.
