Water supply resumes in Woraiyur; mayor inspects affected areas

Trichy: Mayor Mu Anbazhagan on Wednesday inspected the affected wards in Woraiyur in Trichy city, where several people were admitted allegedly due to food poisoning. Following the inspection, the water supply—cut off since April 9—was restored.During his visit, the mayor inspected key hotspots, including Minnappan Street (ward 10) and Panickan Street (ward 8), from where numerous residents were hospitalized at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Govt Hospital (MGMGH) and other nearby facilities. He also examined overhead water tanks and the pipelines supplying water to the area.As part of the inspection, drinking water from a few households was tested for chlorine levels in the presence of local residents. The mayor urged the public to boil drinking water before consumption and personally consoled families affected by diarrohea in the area. He assured residents that they could reach out to him directly with any complaints.The issue drew significant attention after multiple people fell ill on April 18, allegedly due to contaminated water mixed with sewage being supplied through the pipelines. However, civic authorities ruled out water contamination, attributing the illnesses instead to food consumed during a temple festival in the second week of April.On April 19, the Regional Public Health Water Analysis Laboratory in Trichy collected and tested 15 water samples from wards 8, 9, and 10. These included samples from areas such as the Kollidam water source, Panickan Street, Minnappan Street, Pandamangalam, and Nachiyarpuram. The report, released on April 21, confirmed the absence of pathogenic organisms, including faecal streptococci, salmonella, and vibrio cholerae.
