Trichy: Villagers from Thuraiyur in Trichy district held road blockade on Monday, alleging that they have not been receiving proper drinking water supply for the past few days.
According to sources, residents of Gandhinagar colony in Keerampur village near Thuraiyur have not been getting regular drinking water supply for the past three months. Agitated over this, they resorted to blocking the road near Perumal Malai.
The villagers claimed that although they had lodged complaints with the village panchayat administration and the block development officer, no proper action had been taken so far.
Officials from the police, revenue, and rural development departments arrived at the spot and held peace talks with the protesting villagers. They assured that appropriate action would be taken and proper drinking water supply would be arranged. On receiving the assurance, the villagers withdrew the blockade and dispersed.
Due to the blockade, vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road and were unable to move forward. As a result, traffic on the Thuraiyur–Perambalur road was severely affected for more than one hour.
